I first fell in love with fantasy adventure when I read Lord of the Rings in the 1970s. Learning about D&D in 1981 and playing it with my high school friends made me total convert to the genre.
I discovered the game Rogue on UNIX in 1983, followed by Hack & Nethack on the IBM PCs in the mid-to-late 1980s. Next came the TSR D&D DOS games in the late 1980s and early 1990s, like Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Eye of the Beholder.
The video game Diablo in 1997 took this dungeon-crawler genre to the next level, all the way to Diablo IV… and D&D genre got dialed up to 11 with Balder’s Gate 3!
As much as I love these modern video games, I would find myself wishing I could play a simple turn based game like Nethack or Rogue again, but maybe with more depth and a bit of visual facelift.
From my experiences and wishes bloomed my idea for Adventure Time, a game that is far more complex than Rogue but far less complex than Diablo IV or Balder’s Gate 3. I hope you enjoy the casual but engaging nature of it as much as I do!
